Here are some tips to follow to properly winterize your motorcycle before storing it and avoid surprises in the spring
We recommend thoroughly washing your motorcycle before seasonal storage. It will look even better when you see it again next season!
Fill up your tank with gas and we’ll add a stabilizer. A tank filled with stabilizer won’t corrode.
Motorcycles with electronic fuel injection have an automatic fuel valve, so no intervention is necessary.
For motorcycles equipped with a manual fuel tap, turn it to the “off” position.
It’s a bit more involved for a carbureted motorcycle. Turn the throttle valve to the “off” position and drain the carburetor bowl using the drain screw located underneath it. Repeat this for each carburetor. Some people let the engine run until it runs out of gas after turning the throttle valve to the “off” position. These precautions will prevent the “gummy” carburetor syndrome. The carburetor’s numerous internal parts and passages will be protected from corrosion and the formation of deposits caused by the evaporation of certain fuel components.
We recommend protecting the combustion chamber, cylinders, and pistons by adding a teaspoon of motor oil to each cylinder through the spark plug hole. (Use the same type of oil as the one used in the engine.) Crank the engine with the starter (without connecting the spark plugs to prevent it from starting). A few revolutions are all it takes to properly coat the cylinder walls and pistons.
Check the coolant quality if you store your motorcycle in an unheated location. If you don’t have a hydrometer, don’t take any chances and replace it. Coolant should be changed at least every two years. Use a coolant specifically formulated for motorcycles. In addition to ensuring optimal engine temperature reduction, its specific anti-corrosion technology protects the entire cooling system and prevents the formation of deposits.
Due to its design, a motorcycle battery will be severely damaged, or even rendered unusable, after storage if it is not maintained. It must therefore be kept charged.
We recommend using a low-current automatic smart charger, which is much less expensive than buying a new battery.
If you store your motorcycle in an unheated location, remove the battery, protect it from the cold, and keep it charged.
We recommend lubricating the chain, pivots, lever cables, and pedals before storage.
Inflating tires to the recommended pressure prevents deformation.
