5 TIPS TO SAFELY STORE YOUR MOTORCYCLE DURING WINTER
ADVICES & EXPLANATIONS
some tips and best practices to properly winterize your motorcycle in order to avoid bad surprises in the spring.
Give your motorcycle a good wash before storing it!
If your motorcycle with electronic fuel injection has an automatic fuel valve, no intervention is necessary. For motorcycles equipped with a manual valve, it must be turned “off”. For a carburetor motorcycle, it is a little more complicated. Turn the gas valve to “off” then empty the carburetor bowl using the bleed screw located below it. Repeat for each carburetor. Some let the engine run until it runs out of fuel after turning the gas valve to “off”. These precautions will avoid the “sticky” carburetor syndrome. The many internal parts and passages of the carburetor will be protected from corrosion and deposit formation caused by the evaporation of certain fuel components.
It is also advisable to protect the combustion chamber, cylinders and pistons with a teaspoon of engine oil in each cylinder through the spark plug hole. (Use the same type of oil as that used in the engine). Turn the engine over with the starter (without connecting the spark plugs to prevent starting). A couple of revolutions should coat the cylinder walls and pistons well.
Check the quality of the coolant if you store the motorcycle. If you don’t have a hydrometer to check the condition of the coolant, don’t take any chances and replace it. In any case, the coolant must be changed at least every 2 years. Use a coolant formulated for motorcycles. In addition to ensuring optimal temperature reduction for your engine, its specific anti-corrosion technology protects the entire cooling system (hoses, water pump, aluminum and magnesium crankcase, radiator) and prevents the formation of deposits. Car antifreeze is not recommended.
Oil the chain and lubricate the lever, pedal pivots and cables. Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure to prevent them from warping. Better yet, place the motorcycle on a motorcycle jack; this will protect the tires and suspension from the effects of static weight.
The cover is also a suitable accessory for storage.
André Moto Sport offers a complete winterization service, secure heated storage, and preparation for spring rides. While your motorcycle is with us, take this opportunity to ask us to perform various necessary maintenance tasks or make the mechanical, performance, and/or aesthetic modifications you’ve been dreaming of.
Last but not least, avoid suspending your insurance; you still need it to protect against theft, vandalism, and liability.
